Pouches made with DuPont™ Tyvek®
for Medical Device Packaging
Medical devices and components are sealed in a peel pouch made with DuPont™ Tyvek®, purpose-built for medical device packaging. The breathable material allows full sterilization while maintaining an outstanding microbial barrier for safe product handling.
Tyvek® packaging provides a high level of confidence and assurance to medical device manufacturers. DuPont™ Spectrum™ features peel-pouches in a variety of designs and materials including Tyvek®. Tyvek® 1073B, 1059B, and 2FS are popular choices for sealing various polymeric materials, providing required peel characteristics.

Material selection is based on the specific barrier properties required and the sterilization method that will be used. The most popular materials for medical device packaging pouches are:
Standard and custom sizes available. Pouches can be configured as self-seal or heat-seal. Contact our packaging engineers to discuss material selection for your specific device and sterilization process.

Pouches made with Tyvek® are used as sterile barrier packaging for medical devices, surgical instruments, and implantable components. The breathable Tyvek® material allows sterilization gases (EtO, steam, gamma) to penetrate the package while maintaining a microbial barrier throughout the product's shelf life. Common applications include infusion devices, orthopedic implants, ophthalmic instruments, and surgical components.
Per ISO 11607, sterility of a sealed medical device package is maintained as long as package integrity is preserved; there is no universal time limit. Properly sealed and stored, peel pouches made with DuPont™ Tyvek® can maintain sterility for years when kept in controlled environments away from moisture, UV, and physical damage. Manufacturers validate shelf life through accelerated aging protocols specific to their device and packaging system.
Common limitations include sensitivity to improper sealing (which can compromise the sterile barrier), material incompatibility with certain sterilization methods, and single-use requirements. Selecting the correct Tyvek® grade, such as 1073B for EtO and steam, 2FS for low-temperature plasma sterilization, or 1059B where print visibility is required, mitigates most application-specific risks. Our packaging engineers can help specify the right configuration for your device and sterilization process.
Bags and pouches made with Tyvek® are flexible packaging formats made from DuPont™ Tyvek®, a spunbonded olefin material that is both breathable and resistant to microbial contamination. In medical applications, bags made with Tyvek® serve as the primary sterile barrier for devices and implants, and are manufactured under controlled conditions to meet ISO 11607 sterile packaging requirements.
